Ballack out of World Cup

Chelsea Midfielder and Germany captain Michael Ballack has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his ankle in Chelsea's FA Cup win.

The injury occurred in the first half of the final after a late tackle from Kevin Prince Boateng of Portsmouth. Due to the excessive swelling, scans on the ankle were postponed for the day after to reveal the worst for Ballack's hopes of playing in a third World Cup. Germany's plans have been rocked significantly after the news that their captain will not be leading them on the pitch.

Germany's coach Joachim Loew stated his disappointment of losing his captain, "Michael Ballack is a very important player for us, in the decisive matches he often played a very, very important role for us, a central role for us."

The news deals a vital blow for Germany's chances at the World Cup, however Australia, Ghana and Serbia will be seeking to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Boateng has since apologised for the malicious tackle, however Ballack claims the tackle was made on purpose.
